The Best Budget-Friendly Investing App: Public

This post may contain affiliate links, but all opinions are 100% mine. Please read our terms of use & privacy policy for more information.

Let’s talk about investing on a budget! It’s finally 2021 and I know we’re all trying to get a grip on our to-do list and finances. Today I want to share with you my new favorite investing platform, Public!

Public is a free investing app that offers fractional investing with no commission fees or account minimums. What I love about Public is the community aspect within the app. Not only are you able to buy fractional shares of your favorite companies, but you’re also able to connect with other like-minded investors to discuss money and investing topics directly from the Public social forum.

As an advocate for community building, the social tools built into Public help new investors gain confidence and understanding of the market. Here’s what I will be covering in today’s post about the Public, the investing app:

  1. Getting started on Public

  2. App features

  3. New investor benefits

If you prefer a video review of Public to get a better understanding of how I use the app and how you can open an account, check this video out:

Please note: Public is only available within the U.S.

Getting Started on Public

For those ready to start investing in 2021 but are worried about their budget constraints, consider investing through Public. To get started, all you have to do is download the app (available on both iOS & Android) and set up your account by answering a few basic questions like age (18+ only), social security number, and home address.

Once your profile is confirmed, you’ll be able to link Public to an external bank account through Plaid, which is a safe and secure way to connect your bank information. You’ll be able to start investing as soon as your transfer clears. Investors on Public have over 5,000 stocks to choose from and stocks are organized by categories, which makes it easier for you to stay laser focus on your investment goals.

Similar to a traditional investing platform, Public also provides you with tools to track your progress. You’ll be able to see your portfolio status directly from the homepage when you sign in.

App Features

I am excited to team up with Public as a Verified Creator because I get to invest on their platform and share with my community the power of building a portfolio through fractional share investing. I built Invested Millennial by being transparent about my investing journey and sharing the ways I have been able to save and invest thousands of dollars every year. Now, with Public, I get to share with my community how I can still be a “successful” investor and see growth by investing $50-$100 per month, which is something most people can work towards.

Also, it’s important to note that you can buy full shares of stocks through Public, too! So you get the best of both worlds: access to fractional share investing and the ability to buy full shares.

Lastly, by far my favorite feature on Public is their social forum. In a way, think of Public as being a social investing network. You’re able to follow other investors and get a taste of their perspective on anything investing and personal finance related. Feel free to join me on Public and stay up to date with my portfolio public.com/investedmillennial.

New Investor Benefits

It’s time to wrap things up, so I want to leave you with some key features that will help you decide if Public is the right investing platform for you. Like mentioned earlier, this is an investing platform that allows you to primarily invest in fractional shares and there is a built-in social aspect to the platform that will help investors find the support they need along the way.

Public is a great platform for:

  1. People who don’t have a ton of money but want to start investing

  2. People who don’t know much about investing and are looking for guidance, support, and inspiration

  3. Investors looking for a fast and easy user-experience

  4. Investors who enjoy combining a social element to investing and community building

  5. Anyone who wants to save money on commissions fees
